What are the benefits of using tmpfs for /tmp partition, as opposed to having /tmp be a partition or part of a partition on disk, assuming one will not use /tmp for building? I do not see how performance will be greatly increased since reads/writes to /tmp seem to be infrequent.

- you don't want to write too much to your SSD
- you don't want to loose time cleaning it at boot
- maybe on laptops you can spare a few disk resumes
- your / partition is almost full, you need an exstension and your partition table is full
Seriously, I don't know

I use /tmp as a scartch space so it would be faster for me. *shrugs*

Basically, the use of tmpfs is to place system elements into ram, since tmpfs is a ram established file system.
This definitely increases performance versus that obtained from HDD.

/tmp is my... temporary place where I download random stuff, extract it, edit it, etcetera. When I'm happy with it I move it elsewhere.
I use tmpfs.
