Since a few days and after a few updates Arch through KDE 4.4 simply does not shutdown (or restart for that matter) properly anymore using the button. It will only shutdown with pressing ctrl+alt+f1, logging in as root and executing shutdown -r now or shutdown -hP now.
Also startup sounds no longer work correctly and I personally think this is related somehow.
One note I am one of those few who doesn't hate pulseaudio, although running several apps at time doesn't give issues, I also think this has a part in it.
I can live without the startup sounds, but pressing the shutdown button and that that actually works, would suite me fine.
Any ideas?

Exact same problem(s), down to the last detail. Except one--there's no pulseaudio on my system.

when I first installed 4.4 I had a similar problem. When I did a complete fresh install it worked again. my best bet would be rming all the de4 config files and restarting. If not try removing kde completely (with config files) then installing again, or just wait for 4.5 (very soon now, beginning of august) and see if the problem is fixed.

I cracked it, it seemed to be Gstreamer related (default backend Phonon uses in Arch). Using Phonon-git from AUR and using the mplayer backend has is it solved for me currently.
Xine might also work for others, but with Xine Amarok cannot seek in FLAC files, Mplayer and Gstreamer can.
With the startup sounds fixed KDE shutdowns normal again, for now.
