Alsamixer problem

I went through alsaconfig to set up my hda-intel sound drivers. It said that it worked. I tried to run alsamixer to successfully configure the levels.

This is the output I got:
No protocol specified
No protocol specified
XOpenDisplay() failed
ALSA lib pulse.c:229:(pulse_connect) PulseAudio: Unable to connect: Connection refused

I am familiar with arch but I am not experienced with sound.
Please help. Thank you.

It has been a day already. Can somebody help me?

I got my sound to work but it doesn't work on Skype.
