Can't seem to load any nvidia module

I've tried the normal drivers, the 96xx, and the 173xx drivers. All of them come back with this error despite having an Nvidia FX 5200 card:

[root@bismuth ~]# modprobe nvidia
FATAL: Error inserting nvidia (/lib/modules/2.6.34-ARCH/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko): No such device
[root@bismuth~]# lspci | grep -i vga
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] (rev a1)

I just installed arch on this box after 3 years of not updating it, figuring it was easier to start over than to try pacmaning it. The nvidia drivers I had from back then worked just fine.

I tried nouveau as a fallback, but they had a bunch of annoying quirks I couldn't live with (like not letting me force-set a resolution).

Any advice on how to get the proprietary drivers running again?

Thanks!

Re: Can't seem to load any nvidia module

no idea how did you installed nvidia 96xx and 173xx. we are not supporting those because of http://www.archlinux.org/news/502/

i guess you used the nvidia installer and because in 2.6.34 we got nouveau, that is using your card. blacklist nouveau and reboot

but then nvidia wouldn't work because we have xorg-server 1.8

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Are you sure you have a fully updated system?
Use nouveau and Gallium3D

I'm working in a place with 1.5KB/s internet, so it's not completely updated. I rsynced a local mirror when I had broadband and sneaker-net moved it to this installation site. It's about two days old.

The 96xx and 173xx versions were in the AUR and I downloaded the necessary files over the course of about five hours. There's a workaround for using Xorg 1.8 HERE.

I'll give blacklisting nouveau a shot. Thanks! I didn't even think to check that is was running because I uninstalled the package for it.

Update: Yes, blacklisting nouveau worked great! I can now load the nvidia drivers again, and when launching X with "startx -- -ignoreABI" everything seems to work properly. Amazing that Arch decided to get rid of the 96xx and 173xx drivers from the repos because of this...
