i've been trying to get my nvidia card to work again after the nvidia upgrade but i think i'm sol here.
my card is the 5200 which is unsupported in the new 256 version. i tried to use the 173 version but the new x server abi is version 7 which apparently does not play with the 173 nvidia driver. i started to try to roll back the xorg server but then realized how many dependencies i'd have to fix.
i've been using arch for a few months on a friends recommendation (i tried other distros before and hated them) and i actually love using arch over windows for a hundred and one reasons, mainly because i'm addicted to tweaking stuff. i have a feeling there's no easy going back on this driver though, unless i just don't know something, which is my question:
do i have any other option than rolling back tons of things? i can always boot into windows (only done that once since i installed arch!) to play some games, but i'd prefer not to!
or - is there an easier way to roll back xorg-server?

cool. i think i pacman'd nouveau but forgot to ever set it up in xorg.conf. i will check it out when i get home. i'll check out ARM even if nouveau works for me - seems like a handy thing to know. thank you!

xorg.conf is passé.
I think you should read the wiki about the xorg 1.8.

I would not recommend the nouveau driver for a GeForce FX 5200. Performance is very bad with the most recent nouveau driver on the 5200. If you do manage the rollback, you can block the xorg and kernel related packages from updating by editing your /etc/pacman.conf as described in my post here:

Also, with Arch and any other rolling release type distro, frequent full system backups are a must. Despite what anyone may tell you, with any rolling release distro, sooner or later a full system upgrade will break your system bad. Restoring from a backup is the easiest way back to square one.

I have FX 5500 and the performance is definitely good enough for web browsing. I "benchmarked" my settings by playing a round of hedgewars (a Worms clone) and all was well @ 50% cpu utilization. As I don't play games, I don't mind.
Nvidia may release updated 173xx drivers one day, so you can simply wait a bit and see.
I have the whole xorg-ecosystem (10 packages) in IgnorePkg and nothing broke as yet.
As kilgoretrout wrote, Allan is going to break your system sooner or later, so ...
