So after a bunch of fiddling I finally got btrfs working as my root drive. In order to do this i had to copy my root directory over to an sd card, format the drive as btrfs and then copied everything over. Im sure this messed with permissions as I had to reinstall a few things to get it to work properly again. Not sure if this is part of the problem or not though.
Using the i915 driver for the intel 945gm on my eee pc. Stock kernel still...
Heres the error after i run xinit as user:
The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler reports:
>Error: Cannot open "/tmp/server-0.xkm" to write keyboard description
> Exiting
(EE) Error compiling keymap (server-0)
(EE) XKB: Couldn't compile keymap
XKB: Failed to compile keymap
Keyboard initialization failed. This could be a missing or incorrect setup of xkeyboard-config.
X works perfectly fine as root.
So, I reinstalled xorg, xf86-input-keyboard and xkeyboard-config, nothing worked.
Also not using an xorg.conf, just using the hal example config files for everything atm. Using only "exec dwm" for my xinitrc.
edit: I have been searching the forums and google for similiar issues, none of the solutions found worked for me sadly

Check the permissions of /tmp. I had a similar problem when I put my /tmp on a ramdisk and didn't chmod it.

Awesome...just ran into the same issue, hadn't thought to check the freespace on the disk.
