Installing Arch Linux in Virtualbox on XP

I have to use XP at work ... bleh tongue  I do however have access to virtualbox, and got it setup and working.

Just some quick notes, not that anyone else will care smile . I'll post more later once I'm back at that machine, IBM thinkpad.

Generatred xorg file with

hwd -xa

then deleted ALL modelines in the file.
Reset the DefaultDepth to 24 it was set at 16.
Changed the default screen resolution to "1440x900" instead of "1024x768".

Installed kde and lxde, however lxde works much better/faster, mouse is flakey, I'll look at the xorg file later.

Installed the VirtualBox guest additions.
mounted the cdrom and browsed to the guest addtions iso, cd'd to the correct directory and installed them.

Installed slim added to rc.conf, and changed .xinitrc to use lxde on startx.
Installed cool Arch theme for slim big_smile

Result, I can fullscreen the virtualbox session, run Arch Linux,  and not have to look at the XP crap wink

Re: Installing Arch Linux in Virtualbox on XP

The lengths we humans go to just to avoid things sometimes baffles me.

Isn't there a specific kernel that works better in VB than the stock? For some reason I seem to remember reading about one...

I keep getting distracted from my webserver project...

huh? oooh...  shiny!

Re: Installing Arch Linux in Virtualbox on XP

Hi there

I'm trying to run Arch under a Vbox machine too. My host system is Ubuntu 10-04.

I got Arch running well with KDE, but infortunately i can't have fullscreen mode to work sad

I already tried to follow these instructions: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Vir … _Additions

I did everything but i keep unsuccessful.

Here are my configuration files for you to check:
/etc/X11/xorg.conf: http://pastebin.com/SwQGfAE1
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf: http://pastebin.com/6eJ3n54t
/etc/rc.conf: http://pastebin.com/hXbfE0h0
/boot/grub/menu.lst: http://pastebin.com/14HQeEW3

Load your ArchLinux and go to a terminal console from inside Arch.  Type:

vboxclient --display

and then reboot your ArchLinux VM

You'll be able to drag each side of the window to enlarge it.

Note that vboxclient has some other parameters but only --display is to change the window size, AFAIK.

@csat

Thanks for your reply!

I looked for help on #archlinux at Freenode and i finally found the problem: The driver i was using is vesa, then i change it to vboxvideo and that solved the problem.

Thanks for your attention.
