xfce4 errors [SOLVED]

hello,

i've been trying to install xfce4 by using pacman

(pacman -S xfce4)

and that was a success (all files were installed)

i then added .xinitrc to my home folder.

i wrote in it

"exec ck-launch-session startxfce4"

but nothing happens. If i type startxfce4 manually it reads "Starting x server
line:76 /usr/bin/xinit: Success "

but when i type "xfce4-session" it says: "xfce4-session: error whilst loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libSM.so.6: file too short"

how can i get xfce4 to work?

Re: xfce4 errors [SOLVED]

So after you made .xinitrc in your home directory are you typing startx to start it?

A blank screen could be anything.  Can you post some logs of what xorg is doing?  There should be an xorg log in /var/log.

64-bit shouldn't be an issue.  64-bit linux has matured a lot, and tons of people are using it.  It's not really "bleeding edge" anymore.

I think "xf86" refers to xfree86, the project that xorg was branched from.  For both 32-bit and 64-bit, the package name is xf86-video-radeonhd.  See, for example, http://www.archlinux.org/packages/?q=video-radeon.

Arch Linux doesn't have a particular, "best-supported," desktop environment because it philosophically follows a do-it-yourself approach.  That is, developers don't decide on one particular desktop environment that they think is best for you.  Rather, the responsibility is placed on the user.  When you install, you're given a basic shell system, and you must decide whether you want a desktop environment, which one, etc.  From the wiki, "Arch Linux targets and accommodates competent GNU/Linux users by giving them complete control and responsibility over the system" (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/The … er-centric).

I don't have an ATI video card, so I can't say.  But, the wiki has some information about it: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Radeon

As an aside, even though the naming is xf86, you should call them xorg drivers.  Everyone uses xorg nowadays, not xfree86.  If you say xfree86, people might think you're using that system instead of the newer, better xorg.

It doesn't really make a difference, but it's recommend that you put "[SOLVED]" at the beginning of the title, not the end, as explained in http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/For … ow_to_Post.
