I was trying to watch some AVIs a few days ago and every media player I tried had a different issue. By default they were opened with mplayer, which had no interface so at first I tried to use something else, but in the end it seemed to be the most reliable so I decided to just figure out how to control it with the keyboard. It seemed to be fine but after about 45-50 minutes it just randomly crashed. Is this common?
I tried using gnome mplayer, the version that has an interface, but for some reason it had an error when I opened it. I don't have the AVI files at the moment so I can't check the exact error message, but it was something to do with nvidia, even though I have an AVI card. I just hit okay and the video seemed to play fine, but it also randomly crashed at some point.
I tried totem media player, but it wouldn't play the AVI files at all. How can I install extra media codecs/plugins to totem player?
Finally, I tried VLC, which worked great but for some reason randomly froze at several points and eventually crashed.
Is there any fix for the crashing that seems to be present in so many of these media players or is that something I will just have to live with?

I would suggest that you install xvba-video and mplayer-vaapi from the catalyst repo.also install smplayer (mplayer frontend). I play avi files just fine no problems what so ever. I'm ATI card user as well.

Thanks a lot, I will try this out. Like I said I don't have the video files at the moment, they were on an external drive that I currently don't have with me. I will post back here when I find out if it worked, though. If anyone else has any more ideas before then, feel free to let me know.

I searched for information on the catalyst repo and couldn't find anything. I found that both of those are in AUR, but are marked as unsupported. Are the versions in the catalyst repo you mentioned supported version? If so what should I add to my pacman.conf to enable this repository?

IIRC there's a whole repo dedicated to catalyst.

Oh, wow. I'm not sure how I missed that. I skimmed over that page and didn't notice it. I suppose I didn't find it when searching because the header is "Catalyst's Repositories" and I searched "catalyst repository".
