I have tried booting both the i686 and x86_64 core discs on this laptop and the i686 core disc boots into the splash screen and when I asked it to boot up to carry out an installation it takes me to a login and I am able to carry out an installation without any problems.
I have installed 64 bit distros on here before without any issues.
I know I could just use the i686 core disc but this would not allow me to run my 64 bit xp virtually within Arch.
The 64 bit Arch image allows me to get to the splash screen but then fails when it gets to the udev part of the boot process...
Google turns up no related results.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Do you have more information? Are there any error messages? What is udev detecting when it freezes?

I agree with the above post, you have not provided enough information. But the fact that the boot process fails might indicate an issue with KMS. Do you have an ATI or Intel VGA? Furthermore, "...but then fails..." can mean anything, what exactly happens? Does you laptop explode? Does your screen go black? Explain further...
