Using pommed made the backlight screen work on tty, but this is what I did to get it working on X.
You need to compile a module called nvidia-bl for the backlight to work on Xorg.
makepkg -i -s
modprobe nvidia-bl
and finally add nvidia-bl in /etc/rc.conf

Well I did everything what you said, but it's still not working. It's true that works in tty.
When I am in X and type pommed -d i get this errors:
KBD backlight value is 0

Does someone know what to do now?

I only start pommed occasionally to eject CD's etc, I find it makes my macbook pro overheat... without it, it runs cooler and I don't need the added stuff

But how you control backlight then?

installing nvidia-bl made gnome automatically recognize the keys and worked on X. I pretty sure this is made by gnome-power-manager, if you're not using gnome xfce alos has a power manager and i bet KDE has also one, if you're a WM type of guy, you could try to map the keys in Xorg to adjust brightness.

How would you do that ?

Check the wiki for keyboard or acpi events

Try to add this in your xorg.conf:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Device0"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "NoLogo" "True"
Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1" <----
EndSection
