I'll sum up my problem with the screenshot below.
Rather than display any unicode character, xmobar merely displays a blank space. I'd like to point out that I have compiled xmobar with utf8 support. If it helps any, the font I'm using is Cure, from artwiz, which I'm sure is a part of the problem but I'd like to keep if at all possible.

meh, solved I guess. Can you set a different font in different parts of the bar?
edit: Thinking back, the unicode characters displayed in the shot are being displayed in a terminal using Cure. What does urxvt do to display unicode characters in a font that doesn't support them, and is there some way to implement this in xmobar?

Sidenote: There is a couple of bugs in xmobar in comminity regarding unicode. It's recomended to use xmobar-darcs instead.
