Hello.
Something strange is happening lately. Burning apps can't see blank discs. It doesn't matter if I have cdrkit or cdrtools installed - neither works.
Graveman hangs on start when blank DVD is in tray.
Brasero doesn't see my device and allow only to create ISO images.
cdrecord -minfo fails, with empty DVD-R present in tray:
sudo cdrecord -minfo
Password:

Vendor_info : 'MATSHITA'

Device seems to be: Generic mmc2 DVD-R/DVD-RW/DVD-RAM.
Using generic SCSI-3/mmc CD-R/CD-RW driver (mmc_cdr).
Driver flags : MMC-3 SWABAUDIO BURNFREE
Supported modes: TAO PACKET SAO
cdrecord: Warning: Cannot read drive buffer.
cdrecord: Warning: The DMA speed test has been skipped.
cdrecord: Cannot load media.
I'm in optical group and . Thunar successfully mounts DVD with written content and cdrecord -minfo also gives me information about present media when it's not empty.
Is there anything I can do?

Yes, I do have hal running. Is there something wrong with it?
EDIT: I know it's deprecated, but thunar-volman won't work without it.

That's why I've asked.

Disabling hal doesn't solve this problem - blank DVD disks are still invisible/unreadable by cdrecord.

You did not install DVD-driver, I think.

It's supposed to be in kernel, right? Besides, it was never necessary for me to install external driver, months ago burning DVD discs with tools using cdrkit/cdrtools/dvd+rw-tools wasn't a problem.
I even though that lack of libdvdread package was causing this... but having it installed doesn't help either (as expected - it's just for DVD-Video discs).
EDIT: I've also tried dvd+rw-mediainfo /dev/sr0 - doesn't work.
cdrecord have no problems recognizing empty CD-R medium, so it's happening with DVD discs only.

Try launching with
dbus-launch brasero

Doesn't work. Terminal doesn't give any output, dvd+rw-mediainfo and cdrecord -minfo still can't recognize blank medium.

make sure that the device in the burning tool is the same as the output of 'wodim --devices' !
each app told me that the device is /dev/hda instead of /dev/scd0 !

That's not the case, I'm using cdrecord and growisofs directly, I point to the proper device each time I'm doing something (in my case: /dev/sr0, /dev/dvd, /dev/cd - it's all the same).

I've tried to burn dvd disc with Ubuntu 10.04 and 8.04, with no success. Tried different mediums.
It may be possible that my drive is broken. Strange, it still mounts burned DVD and fully support CD's.
I will be sure if that's the case when I try to burn something in Windows XP.

Are you sure it's a DVD-burner (DVD-R/W)? It may be a 'combo' drive - CD-RW + DVD _reader_

But nevermind that. My drive is broken and can't make an use of blank DVD-R, even in Windows.
Solved tag doesn't make sense here, so I will mark this topic as [CLOSED].
