Is this correct though? Does nvidia-173xx really not support 2.6.34? I'd rather say the PKGBUILD needs updating.

Is there a way round this?

Downgrade or wait. Or hack the PKGBUILD and try to use the current kernel.
Edit or use 'pacman -Sd' to skip dependency checks (never used it, potentially dangerous, I don't know if it works).

i think i shall wait, i thought now that the new nvidia driver had been released for the new xorg that it would work. Am i waiting on a kernel update now?
and thanks once again karol, you've been a great help the last couple of days

Well, a simple solution is to get kernel-2.6.33 from here: http://arm.konnichi.com/search/index.ph … ommunity=1 and replace you current kernel with that.
Changing PKGBUILDs requires a bit more knowledge, but everything is documented at the wiki, so you should read up on that. Or you can wait for someone else to post a PKGBUILD at AUR.

.... and the pigs will fly.
But I think you need to rebuild some stuff before taking off.

sorry, i'm waiting for the pkgbuild of nvidia-173xx to be updated?
i'm pretty sure when i installed this system, that nvidia-173xx was in one of the normal repo's, not aur

It's your computer, you can try to write a PKGBUILD yourself / fix this one.
Alternatively you can wait until it's in the repos.

well, i doubt i could write a new pkgbuild if i wanted to. i just wasn't sure if the pkgbuild i'm waiting for is for nvidia-173xx and if indeed anybody was planning on putting a new pkgbuild in the repos at any point

If the driver will work, it will be in the repos, so you don't have to compile it, you can run pacman and update everything.

I believe the old 173.xx package was in the extra repo and will probably be there again once a package is built for the new one. The updated 173.xx driver was just released yesterday by nvidia and I can only assume it will be a while before it makes its way back into the extra repo. Still no nvidia love for those using the 96.xx driver. Nvidia did release an updated 96.xx driver but it is still not compatible with xorg 1.80 although they say an xorg 1.80 compatible 96.xx driver is in the works and will eventually be released. The oldest nvidia legacy driver, 71.xx, will not be updated by nvidia:

ahhh, thank you. i thought i remembered installing it from one of the main repo's but couldn't find a news article saying it had moved. well, now thats cleared up i'll stop badgering folk with my silly questions haha. My system works fine so i won't be bothering messing with pkgbuilds etc. thanks once again people for explaining things

http://www.archlinux.org/news/502/ reads "Nvidia-173xx and -96xx drivers currently don't support the new Xorg release. We recommend using the xf86-video-nouveau driver package for now."
You can rest assured that their great big comeback to the repos will be hailed in the news too.

hmm, apparently the new drivers with Xorg support are out. Yet still when i try to do an upgrade i get this error -
:: Synchronising package databases... core is up to date extra is up to date community is up to date error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies) :: Starting full system upgrade... :: nvidia-173xx: requires kernel26<2.6.34
am i doing something wrong?
As far as I know, the nvidia-173xx package has been removed from the repositories. I don;t know when it will be available again. Soon, I hope...

Hey yabasta, you'll probably find your mirror is taking a little time to sync. I've just tried it now and it's worked for me.
So it's worth saying; yay!
Edit: Whoops, didn't see the second page there! Haha.
