[Solved] Problem with installing sun java

Hi.

I installed java with

pacman -S jre

and

source /etc/profile

I thought it should be everything, but it is not working. Is there anything more to do, like a firefox-plugin?

Cheers, Mario

Re: [Solved] Problem with installing sun java

Just telling people it isn't working, isn't very helpful.

My guess is that you're using Firefox. Does the plugin not show itself in about:plugins? When you try to load Java applets, does the browser die, what is your problem?

What is your MOZ_PLUGIN_PATH variable set to, what is contained in the paths of that variable?

My Java works with, and I have the following,

> echo $MOZ_PLUGIN_PATH
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
> ls -l /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
total 11528
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 11787664 Jun 11 11:11 libflashplayer.so
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root       34 Apr 16 01:11 libnpjp2.so -> /opt/java/jre/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so

Re: [Solved] Problem with installing sun java

Yes I am using Firefox. Plugin Path is default /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

ls -l /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
insgesamt 132
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root     35 16. Apr 02:01 libnpjp2.so -> /opt/java/jre/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root     44  1. Jun 20:38 libnpsoplugin.so -> /usr/lib/openoffice/program/libnpsoplugin.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 135152 11. Jul 21:54 libvlcplugin.so

So to test java and because I need that page to work anyway, I wanted to use the structure search for chemicals at
http://www.acros.com/portal/alias__Rain … fault.aspx
And instead of starting the java applet it tells me that I need to install java and enable java script (which is enabled). And I made an test at java.com. There it tells me: Something is wrong. Java is not working.

Re: [Solved] Problem with installing sun java

Thank you very much! That's it.
Probably it's my fault, but I would have never thought about searching for this wiki-page, because I've read the wiki-page about java and nothing about that problem was written there. Wouldn't it be good to add a link and comment?

@ athelas
Problems often deal w/ several packages. It's a firefox plugin, so checking that side of the story is IMHO a logical step.

It's a wiki, you know ... :-)

Yeah, probably it is a logical step...

It's a wiki, you know ... :-)

Actually, I don't know. I installed Arch Linux a few weeks ago and although I used Ubuntu a bit before, I am not experienced. So in case you wanted to tell me, that I should add this, if I think it is necessary, I would be glad to do so. But because I never added anything to any wiki and because I am always the one with the questions and not with the answers, I wasn't confident enough just to change something without asking.

Edit: And I guess you've figured out that I am not a native english speaker.

It's not easy to decide what to include and what leave out - that's why the wiki format is so cool. Let's say I'm a guru, and I simply know those things, I don't think it's necessary to add them. You're a newbie and you find that info helpful, so you add it. As long as it's correct it should be OK.

As for your language skills: many people here (me included) are not native English speakers. You can simply put a link there or copy a part of the flash article.

Alright, thanks for your patience and suggestions. I've added a short hint and a link to the note, which said that this will install the plugin as well.
