[SOLVED] Problem with wireless device, RTL8192E

Hello,

I have recently bought the Samsung R580, and have been having trouble getting the wireless to work. The card is the RTL8192E and I have recompiled the kernel to get support for the driver in the staging drivers. This worked fine and I can now see the device under wlan0.

However whenever I issue the command "ifconfig wlan0 up" I get the error:

SIOCSIFFLAGS: operation not permitted

This has got me well and truly stuck. I have tried the drivers under the arch kernel and the most recent mainline kernel. Sorry if i'm just doing something stupid.

I had to compile the driver from the AUR. I have the 2.6.0014.0115.2010-1 version. The latest version (the one in the AUR now) didn't work for me with the 2.6.32 Kernel. I haven't tried the latest AUR version since I upgraded to the 2.6.33 Kernel, so it may now work.

Anyway, Until I compiled this driver, the wireless wouldn't work. (And even still I get the message you see -- but it still works fine.)

Thanks, so you say you still get the message I see but carrying on with the setup and the wireless works fine?

I will try that driver.

Did the new driver work for you? If not...

What does the command: "iwconfig" show?  Does it show you a wireless interface wlan0 or something like it?

If so, try: "sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid any" and then: "sudo dhcpcd -k wlan0" and then: "sudo dhcpcd -n wlan0".  Disable encryption on your router temporarily to make things simpler.

Otherwise... try ndiswrapper with win32 drivers.

Thanks very much for your advice, just got back from my trip.

I will try these out tonight. Also I found some firmware for it, am wondering if it might be that. Where would I put the boot.img for my driver to find it?

That's because no firmware is loaded onto the device, but you have it now so all should be good.

That's because no firmware is loaded onto the device, but you have it now so all should be good.

Hmm, I got the firmware as boot.img, I put that in the directory /lib/firmware/rtl8192e/

Unfortunately I still got the same error, did I put it in the wrong place?
Or might it be the wrong firmware?

Problem solved wahoo!

It was a firmware problem as Meythi said, thanks for everyone's help.

Just to clarify for anyone else who may have problems, after building support for the staging driver in the kernel.
I then had to get the firmware from here, and move all its contents to "/lib/firmware/RTL8192E/" .

Then perform a restart and it should work!

I have a problem with this wireless device. I installed the device with AUR and i installed/configured Networkmanager with the wiki : [wiki]http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NetworkManager[/wiki].

The problem is that i don't see my network with network-manager-applet. I see other network but not mine. So i add manually my network in network-manager-applet but even if "automatic connection" is enabled, my wifi doesn't work.

I don't understand. The firmware on AUR works correctly?
