mpd-like chat daemon

Just randomly googled and came across this GSoC project:-

http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/GSoC201 … eLibpurple

Cool stuff. If this pans out we could just do /etc/rc.d/purple start and have all the configured chats connected. Need to restart X? No problem, just reconnect to the still running daemon. Need to dump X altogether? Just fire up finch smile.

Only worry is that communication seems to be done using dbus, I believe to authenticate that between different users would be more than a bit complex. Similarly to mpd the solution would probably to have the daemon run as its own user....

Well yeah, libpurple basically connects to just about everything (except Skype) so that's the big deal for me I guess. You can't only do IRC nowadays, people are on jabber (or gtalk), on MSN....

Then don't talk to those other people, ngoonee! (If only it were that easy... wink)

What about Minbif? If you keep your IRC program in a (GNU) screen session then you can start and stop X as you please; detach the screen session and then resume it afterwards. But, of course, this will only work for normal chatting. If you need video or voice chat then.. tough luck big_smile

I've seen young people waste their time reading books about sensitive vampires. It's kinda sad. But you say it's not the end of the world... Well, maybe it is!

Re: mpd-like chat daemon

I do it this way sometimes:
At home I chat via irssi + bitlbee. I start irssi in a screen session and when I go e.g. to the university and do something in the linux pool (thank god we have those)  I connect to my pc via ssh and go into that screen session, change my status back to available and here we go, was never offline and can connect from everywhere.
