I read the wiki entry for Video Acceleration
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI … celeration
and installed xvba-video-0.6.11-1 mplayer-vaapi-20100602-4 from Vi0l0's Catalyst repo. Then I configured SMplayer as shown in the wiki and I get that error when I tried to open movies with SMPlayer:
/usr/bin/mplayer: error while loading shared libraries: libgtop-2.0.so.7: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
So there is a missing library maybe ... ?
(This problem doesn't existed before installation of mplayer-vaapi and xvba-video)
Edit: I installed libgtop-2.28.1-1-i686 from extra and the problem is solved for me. I think it should be added as a dependency for mplayer-vaapi. Anyway I am completely disappointed from "video acceleration" - there are artifacts on some movies (big squares), others are being played with 2-3 FPS (like a slideshow) ...

You must be using i686 system...
Unfortunatelly thats my mistake, or being more specific: before compilation mplayer's configure is linking to many many system's libs. The more libs i got here - the more links will be done. Right now my i686 (in contrast to x86_64 which got only kernel and some needed compilation tools) isn't super clean - got installed gnome...
i need to install some virtual i686 arch and ill do it in free time - so maybe next pkgrelease of mplayer-vaapi will be more clean.

What's the difference between catalyst 10.6-4 and 10.6-5 in the catalyst repo?

What's the difference between catalyst 10.6-4 and 10.6-5 in the catalyst repo?
Generaly i only added reminder to hook about main kernel update and using catalyst_build_module - but i believe its important:
- 10.6-5 should be the last release of 10.6, and because of new building scheme its got to be as clear as possible
- who knows what 10.7 will bring, so maybe 10.6 will still be used by some people
- and so it will remind them what to do when 2.6.35 land in core.

Thanks for the info!

Done, so now with updating to mplayer-vaapi-20100713-1 you no longer need libgtop (or any other lib which you needed to install cuz of mplayer's complaining).

Can someone here test Half Life 1 or any Half Life 1 - based game with steam?
For me it doesn't really work
I copy my comment from winehq:
With OpenGL it crashes after 2 seconds in the menu.
With D3d the game runs but the colors are partly wrong, there are issues with the field of sight (it's a bit too big, if you go near a wall you see through it), you also don't see your weapon nor any information like ammunition on the screen nor any menu after you started the game.
Examples:
omploader.org/vNHcyaw
omploader.org/vNHcyagWith software it runs but it is of course very slow and X eats all cpu.

I can confirm your results and I think it's fglrx related. Using the free driver it worked quite well the last time I tried it back in the beginning of the year.

@Cdh:
same here with counter-strike 1.6, x86_64, hd 4850, catalyst 10.6, kernel 2.6.34, bin32-wine 1.2 (from extra).
Can you post bug report @ Unofficial ATI Linux Driver Bugzilla?
If so - maybe its also a good idea to add wine output (if using gl im getting some ioctl errors when menu appears, then its showing only "Options" and "Quit" and after maybe a 1 second its crashed).
There could be similar bug with HL 2 (which i dont have)... can someone test it?

Half Life 2 seems to work. I don't have any weapons or the suit on any savegame lol... and some chars are missing:
http://omploader.org/vNHpkcQ
http://omploader.org/vNHpkcw
But it doesn't crash.
I first used wine 1.1.44 with warcraft patches, now I found this: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=36759
I removed the pulse patches and the non working saves-patch, then set it to rc7 and compiled it without problems. With warcraft3 it runs very good. The warcraft patches don't seem to be guilty when others have this too.
The webserver on http://ati.cchtml.com/ doesn't seem to work.

VI0l0 can you build mplayer-vaapi with the --enable-pulse option from now on?

Yep, maybe some maintenance?
VI0l0 can you build mplayer-vaapi with the --enable-pulse option from now on?
No, simply because (i believe) if i do this mplayer (not pacman) will call for missing pulse libs if pulseaudio package isn't present in system.
BUT from now on [catalyst] got new package called mplayer-vaapi-pulse.
Can you tell me is it working fine?

Woo, finally, 2D performance is acceptable.

There is also another one minor thing we should to pray for - xserver 1.9 in ubuntu 10.10
More precisely: xserver 1.9 (1.9 final should be released in less than one month) got new ABI which is incompatible with catalyst (ive even tested "IgnoreABI" "True" flag in xorg.conf, without success)... and i don't expect that catalyst would support 1.9 until 1.9 land on some catalyst's supported distro.

Guys, quick question: Does anyone have working HDMI audio with catalyst? I know xf86-video-radeonhd supports this, but I really don't want to switch.

@Vi0l0 thanks for that, though, it won't play. I'll stick with the oss/alsa drivers.

It seems that the black box issue is going to end with 10.7. From http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24689 :
The final Catalyst 10.7 is stable now *Trumps Up*
working multi-monitor ATI Eyefinity support
final kernel 2.6.34 support
xserver 1.8 support
black windows bug fixed
working video acceleration on hd5000 chips.
runs on ubuntu 10.10 (if ubuntu do not upgrade xserver1.8 to 1.9)
many more bugs fixed...
But still no xorg-server 1.9 support yet. We have to pray a little more...

That post on Phoronix forums is pure speculation. I wouldn't get my hopes up

Enabling it the same way as radeonhd works for me with catalyst. Just add:
Option "Audio" "on"
Option "HDMI" "all"
Into the "Device" section of your xorg.conf.
Then restart X, run "aplay -l" and search your device, mine is "card 1: HDMI [HDA ATI HDMI], device 3: ATI HDMI [ATI HDMI]", and try if it works with "aplay -D plughw:1,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav" (this all is also explained in ATI's wiki: [wiki]ATI#HDMI_with_sound[/wiki]). If it works, edit your asoundrc to make alsa use that device as default, with somehting like:
defaults.ct1.card 1
defaults.pcm.card 1
defaults.pcm.device 3
Restart alsa, and that's all.
Maybe it's a way better to do it, if anyone knows i will appreciate it.

You can use asoundconf from aur.
~ % asoundconf list
Names of available sound cards:
NVidia
HDMI
SAA7134
asoundconf set-default-card HDMI.
There is no "restarting" of alsa. Just restart programs that have the alsa output currently open.
