I've been experimenting with Archlinux as operator PC for DIY CNC machine, using great piece of software called EMC2, which requires kernel with realtime patch (e.g. RTAI), so I've decided to make PKGBUILDs for emc2, patched kernel and realtime modules. (Planning to add some g-code related tools for conversion etc.)
Currently i686 only:

Current status:
kernel26rtai 2.6.32.2 - RTAI patched, with config from distro kernel26
rtai 3.8 - the latest realtime modules
emc2 2.3.4 - not the latest one (I encountered some G2, G3 problems with 2.3.5,sources for 2.3.6 are corrupted)
Warning: PKGBUILD are not complete yet, some dependencies are missing (I'm working on it).
Anyone interested in using your favorite OS with CNC?

I'd love to use Arch for a CNC, unfortunately I can't afford a CNC... maybe in 10 years hehe

I'm really enthusiastic to see that somebody works on i686 + EMC2.
I don't know ArchLinux, I'm a quite friendly user of Linux.
My issue (before find this forum) was : I have a HP Kayak (old server) and there is no good way to use Ubuntu + EMC2. (Each time, Kernel panick, or some strange error with i386 distro).
I want to keep this PC for CNC, because jitter max is about 7000us. (My second one is a AMD64x2 + ATI, but there is some problem between RTOS + ATI propriatary driver).
Also I tried to search a better distro (lighter), I found this forum.
Yesterday, I download ArchLinux distro, I will try it on my computer. I never used Arch, I hope there is nice forum to help me .

I introduce to you myself :
I'm an electrical engineer from France, I works with servos and/or inverter each day.
My little idea is to get professional servos, for the lowest cost. I hope, I can get a 400W,3000rpm, 3Nm, 20bit INC encoder, speed loop of 1500Hz, .... for about 500€ (wires includes). For the time being, I can have one for free (I use the sample product of my company:p).
The hardware that I have to make is an optical insulator, easy to do.

through proxy? man cvs says i can add proxy="proxy_server" and proxyport="port" and as a result:

I've been stockpiling cnc components for the last year, or so. That includes a Joe's CNC 4x4 Hybrid (www.joescnc.com) and a bunch of hobbycnc electronics/steppers/etc.
I'm just at the point of starting to look at the software side. I'm just about to start work on a pxeboot ArchLinux / EMC2 setup. I'm quite familiar with pxeboot so it shouldn't take too long to get it working.
