Purple line with KMS

As the title says, I have KMS running with my Radeon 5770 on my desktop. I see a vertical purple line on the left hand side of the screen right after grub. This is before I start X. The purple line is evident in X also.

If i disable KMS with radeon.modeset=0 and remove the module, the line is gone.

I'm usually pretty good at following the excellent wiki but this one has me stumped, and I can't find a solution on google.

edit: Without KMS enabled my X server just freezes my machine until it reboots itself. Ctrl+Alt+F1 will not do anything.

Exactly the same, thanks for the link.

Same with the previous thread, the line is gone with VGA. although i think the image has just shifted that much left. May be a modeline setting?
