[SOLVED] startkde over SSH

I have Arch running kde as a home server.  I'm trying to SSH in from my laptop( this should mater by my laptop is running Ubuntu).  From my laptop I open up a new display on vt 8 with

xinit -- :1 vt8

ctrl + alt + f8

from tty8 I ssh into my Arch box with:

ssh -2X 192.168.1.100

when i run 'startkde'

I get

$DISPLAY is not set or cannot connect to the X server.

What am I missing?

EDIT:
Well this is embarsing.  I guess it would have helped if I would have configured my SSHD to allow X11-forwarding.  Sorry to have wasted everyones time lol

It's no waste since you have outlined the process, others who take the time to search will benefit from this information.
