the message I get when I launch X :
(EE) Microsoft MicrosoftR 2.4GHz Transceiver v6.0: failed to initialize for relative axes.
this is a keyboard/mouse combo, and the keyboard is working fine (but I think the batteries will die soon)
thanks for your help

1) Do you have xf86-input-mouse installed?
2) Are you using xorg.conf?
Offline
should I install it ?
for xorg.conf, I don't think so since it's a new installation and I didn't create it myself

Definitely install xf86-input-mouse. Also, if you haven't already, install xf86-input-keyboard to make your keyboard work inside of Xorg.
If you are still getting that error after installing those, try using an xorg.conf:
# X -configure
# cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
I wasn't able to get my keyboard working until I set up an xorg.conf

none of those two solutions worked

Could your problem be similar to this?

don't think so

Install xf86-input-evdev.
Offline
I was already using evdev
stupid question, what do I need to do to use mouse instead of evdev ?

Maybe you need to write a conf file for your mouse and put it in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d.

First of all, please tell us what you have in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d - 10-evdev.conf should be enough to get you mouse & keyboard working but in some cases it may require additional tweaking.
How do you connect the wireless thing to your computer - via sub or the regula mouse/kbd ports?
Post the output of
dmesg | grep serio

So you have to look in your dmesg to check how are your devices named and whether they are picked up in the first place
[karol@black ~]$ dmesg | grep serio
serio: i8042 KBD port at 0x60,0x64 irq 1
serio: i8042 AUX port at 0x60,0x64 irq 12
input: AT Translated Set 2 keyboard as /devices/platform/i8042/serio0/input/input0
psmouse serio1: ID: 10 00 64
input: ImExPS/2 Generic Explorer Mouse as /devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input3
Now I know that input3 is my mouse and input0 is my kbd.

Run
tail -f /var/log/kernel.log
and disconnect that usb thing then put it back - you should see what the kernel's doing: it should disconnect and than reconnect it.
I think 'ehci_hcd' is a storage device - a pendrive or sth. ehci = Enhanced' Host Controller (EHCI) Driver

when I unplug the usb receiver, the
usb 2-1.1: reset full speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 3
stops printing

You plug in one or two (one for kbd and one for mouse) usb cables?
If the mouse batteries aren't dead then maybe try a different usb port.
Do you have hal running?
(II) config/hal: Adding input device Microsoft Microsoft® 2.4GHz Transceiver v6.0

hal isn't running, I'm using udev
I only have evdev and mouse listed
trying another usb port didn't help (it's a wireless receiver, it's for both keyboard and mouse)
edit :
tried a wired mouse… it works
tried the wireless mouse on win xp… it works

You usually need them.
If you have xorg.conf, add
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AutoAddDevices" "False"
EndSection
Post the output of
lsusb
dmesg

I think we're doing it the wrong way
what does that message mean ?
if we don't know, we should check the source code
the receiver is well recognized, the keyboard works, it's all about what the mouse sends to the computer, I think, do you get what I'm saying ?

I've seen that error a couple times in other posters' logs and those people never had any problem with their Microsoft / Logitech gear. If you look just before that error, you'll see other info about your receiver. I think it works OK but somehow your mouse doesn't.
No, I don't know how to fix it :-(
