is there a reason why apache was not built with mod_deflate?
ie..
--enable-deflate

just wondrin. I was reading about mod_deflate saving upwards of 40-50% of traffic due to compressing html and text for browsers that support it.

did you ever hear anything about including mod_deflate by default, or at least a pkg for it?  i've built my own package, but it'ld be easy obviously if it was part of the base install.

I have no idea, but thinking off the top of my head, perhaps its not done by default because it takes up more resources on the server to actually compress all the data it sends.

That's my theory, but I expect to be stood corrected!

it appears as easy as adding --enable-deflate in the pkgbuild for a self built pkg. the compile time for that was small. like i said, it would just be nice not to have to maintain a separate pkg for that.

also, it's not used without explicitly enabling it by a directive that can be restricted pretty easily so that the only resources you want or that shrink well get behavior.
