I'll add trying to get it to output some video, to my list of things to do (along with successfully  installing arch 0.1 on a VM - GAH ! , and trying out plan9 from outer space..)

Re: Oldschool/HC screenshots

My first computer was a piece of tree bark that ran Linux in 1975. But we've already talked about that in another thread. roll

C'mon! Strummer asked for your old and hardcore screenshots! Where are the screenshots that you saved from ten or more years ago that show how you had your computer setup? How about a scanned photo of you using your old computer? big_smile

Re: Oldschool/HC screenshots

The C64 was my first computer as well.  I had the Epic "Fast Load" cartridge and the 5.25" disk drive. No cassette though. Oh, and a 300 baud modem to dial into CompuServe.  Next was a 386SX-20 with a whopping 2 megs of RAM and a 20 meg hard drive. If it wasn't for that 386, I would have never learned to use a command line, our next family PC came with Windows 3.1.

Great, now thanks to this thread I'm going to have to spend the day getting DOS and Windows 3.1 set up in Virtual Box.. maybe do some QBasic programming smile

Re: Oldschool/HC screenshots

When I was in primary school I had a VIC 20.

Later I had a HP LX200. This was a cool machine. Handheld computer running DOS 5 and some custom software. It had CGA graphics and ran a lot of the older DOS software. It was the machine I learnt to program on mainly using Turbo Pascal 7 and 80(1)86 assembly language. I still have it somewhere.

Come now, you can't deny they both had the similar large sprite graphic design! Heck even the vampires had the similar "Blah" noise they'd make! HOMM1 and HOMM2 were both purposely cartoonic in design as well.  Aye, there were some differences, as if I recall HOMM1 used even larger sprite sets and limited creature, dwelling, and such, however compared with say HOMM3 which had a startling larger change in graphic design while maintaining similar play style surely you cannot dismiss the claim of HOMM1 and HOMM2 being graphically similar? At least, after all, I didn't attempt to compare it with HOMM4 which was 100% completely different, almost enough to be it's own game, or HOMM5 which was all eye candy and one and slow and poor attempt to carry on the HOMM name and epic play quality of the past games.

Yes! ZX81 FTW!

Anyway, all these are just generic shots of people's old machines. Here's a real one I found from 2000 (and I'm amazed it's that long ago; I remember sitting here taking it as if it was last week):

Re: Oldschool/HC screenshots

I remember my dad bought me my first computer when I was maybe 6-7 years old because he saw me playing with a girl at a barber shop on her own computer. He got it off a sales person and came up to be 1000+ with a ton of software, and the computer itself of course. It was a Premio with a 500MHz Celeron, 256MB Ram and intel video. My face would not come off the screen. It originally came with Windows 95.

Re: Oldschool/HC screenshots

Are there like themes that provide an old school look? Not entirely the ones posted here. They're too hardcore to handle big_smile I was just trying to find something that Daisuke_Aramaki once posted e.g.:

I believe he was using xfce. Tried searching in xfce-look but can't find one using 'classic' or 'old' as keywords. And my google-fu is failing me big_smile

Re: Oldschool/HC screenshots

The first computer I can remember was my father's 486 DX-66 with 4mb RAM, 800MB HDD and a VESA graphics card (those were HUGE) and Windows 3.11. That was in 1994. 2 years later I got my first PC, Pentium MMX 200MHz, 32MB RAM and 2GB HDD. I also vaguely remember a 3DFX card on that machine. All those games that barely run on the 486 were incredibly fast on the Pentium. Good old days smile

Ah memories, my friend had one of those. I remember playing all the Sierra classics on it. smile

My first PC was a Wang 286-12Mhz with 1MB ram and a 20MB harddisk (1986): http://home.planet.nl/~janvdv/images/Wang240.JPG

Pictured with the EGA screen, ofcourse i convinced my dad to replace it with a VGA very quickly.

Re: Oldschool/HC screenshots

Anybody remember the Atari 800 circa 1982.  I remember writing BASIC programs for it.  8-bit graphics, sprites, peek/poke.
I also had a Timer Sinclair 1000.  It was very limited and had a poor keyboard.
Later I had a Vic 20 and then a Commodore 64.
They were all much fun.  Then came years of Apple/Windows (The 'Dark Years').  Finally, I found Linux... and I was home.

Not really a pre-flood screenshot, but I used to use X11 progs and utilities exclusively for everything whenever possible; and user's "desktop" was entirely configured in .xinitrc and .Xdefaults. Click on a thumbnail for a larger image.

Re: Oldschool/HC screenshots

Since my last post in this thread wink I've been able to collect some old photos of me.

My first personal computer, an IBM something-or-another (I'm sitting on my brother's lap). It booted into the BASICA programming language
D3nPqZps.jpg

Years after that, we got our first Windows 3.1 computer. I still remember hearing the sound of the trumpets ("TADA.WAV") the first time it booted.

After that, I got my first laptop it 1999. It was kind of junky, but it ran much better with Mandrake Linux 8.0. It was my first experience with Linux. (Those are minidiscs behind the laptop.)
vXp4SVCs.jpg

Then in 2002, I got my beloved Fujitsu Lifebook P2110. Man, I miss that thing so much. sad Here it is running Slackware Linux 9.1.
