I've installed vdpau and the newest nvidia drivers but I'm still getting screen tearing when I use HDMI output on a 1920x1080 screen...even with some crappy 600MB avi rips!
Anyone got it working?
(I've tried it on VLC w/ hardware acceleration and mplayer using vdpau. System is 100% up-to-date with xcompmgr disabled while running awesomeWM)

A few days ago.. I realized that I was experiencing some major tearing with VDPAU.
The way I fixed it was by going into /etc/X11/xorg.conf and changing Composite settings from "Enable" to "Disable". I don't think just turning off xcompmgr is enough.

Adding that line fixed the video tearing problem in mplayer (and hence smplayer) but it introduced a new problem in smplayer.
Fullscreen video playback doesn't work correctly (only draws video to the top left of screen and menus drawn over the video never disappear).
I've filed a bug report http://http://sourceforge.net/tracker/? … tid=913573
Hopefully it will fixed at some point.
