Dvdbackup fails more than it works

Hi,

I use dvdbackup to copy rented films to my harddisk, so that I can watch them at any time and so that I don't have the noise from my DVD drive. However, it fails more than that it works. I get the following errors:

• IO errors, including in dmesg.

• It can copy endlessly. With some disks, I can easily copy 30 GB's of a 8.5 GB disk. And it actually needs that much data. Once I tried a DVD of which I copied about 10 GB. It didn't want to play, because files were missing. When I let it continue for a few hours (and 30+ GB's), it worked.

• Last night, I had a DVD which caused dvdbackup's memory usage to soar to > 2GB. I noticed my RAM meter skyrocketed, so I ctrl-c'ed the program. Normally it hardly uses any memory.

So, what is the deal here? Why doesn't it ever work? And how do I copy DVD's?

I tried two different computers BTW, which have the same issues.

Welcome to the wonderful world of DRM.

And how do I copy DVD's?.

You shouldn't copy rented DVDs *at all*. But forgetting that, use a ripper updated to handle the latest DRM crap. They're usually for Windows, but that's what wine is for.

DRM? I thought all the DRM DVDs had was CSS?

Nope. They try again and again to come up with some crap. And the Windows rippers break it within weeks. There's ARccOS, and then there's some other crazy stuff as well that I don't know the name of right now.
