can't load php [SOLVED]

So yeah, can't load php pages. I've followed the directions here and tried it under both nginx and lighttpd: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Nginx. This is using php-cgi. php-fpm gives a 502 (bad gateway) error, and I can't find spawn-php anywhere.

any help?

EDIT: sorry... I'm a nub. my open_basedir wasn't set >_<. let the lolz commence.
