i8042 keyboard module not loading after bios update

UPDATE2: The patch here (modified from here) tentatively appears to fix the battery issue.

UPDATE: I am now able to boot with acpi using the dsdt from the old bios, but I'd rather be able to use the stock kernel.  The battery still shows up as "not present".

I've been pulling my hair out over this, so I figured I might as well post it.

I just got a new Acer Aspire One ao521 netbook last week, and I'm trying to get arch up and running smoothly.  I had pretty much everything running the way I wanted except that /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state listed the battery as not present, so I decided to try updating from BIOS version 1.01 to 1.03.  Then the keyboard stopped working.  This also happens when booting from a USB stick.

After fiddling around with kernel parameters for a bit, I realized that acpi=off fixes the keyboard issue, so I was able to get in and set up sshd in order to get some more info on what happens during boot when acpi is turned on.  (I'd really like to have acpi).

The keyboard problem is a result of the i8042 module not loading.  I've tried all the combinations of the i8042 kernel params that I can think of to no avail.  I also tried usb-handoff (which doesn't appear to exist anymore).

PNP: PS/2 Controller [PNP0303:KBC0,PNP0f13:MSE0] at 0x60,0x64 irq 1,12
i8042.c: Can't read CTR while initializing i8042.
i8042: probe of i8042 failed with error -5

...

Also, there appears to be some sort of IRQ issue related to USB.  The irqpoll parameter doesn't help, but both disabling acpi and blacklisting usbcore make the irq problem go away.  (Blacklisting usbcore does not fix the keyboard issue though).

Some of the material my googling turned up suggests turning off USB plug and play support in the BIOS, but unfortunately my bios is kind of crippled and doesn't have many more options than editing the boot order.

I can try downgrading the BIOS if I really need to, but I'd like to try to get the current one working.  Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Here's the full dmesg output for completeness:

Before all this happened, I fixed the basic compile errors (as best I could) with the dsdt from the old bios and compiled it into the kernel.  It didn't seem to change anything, but I can do it again with this one if you guys think it would help.

Oh, and the battery still doesn't show up after the bios update.

Re: i8042 keyboard module not loading after bios update

Regarding your keyboard problem, it seems to be a very low-level problem. The driver cannot access the Control Registers on the Keyboard. By going down from your error message to the lowest level, one can see that it's probably a simple "outb" operation (write data on a specified address, shouldn't fail if the address is correct...) that doesn't succeed.

So I think you defintely need to look in your BIOS if you didn't deactivate something when upgrading, or messed with some address space, or many things I cannot think of right now.

Good luck

Re: i8042 keyboard module not loading after bios update

Thanks Ber.  FYI, I left a Windows partition on the machine which doesn't seem to be having any trouble with ACPI.  I've been looking over the spec a little and looking at the differences in the asl files from the two BIOSes, but no luck so far.  I can post the files if anyone's interested.  I'd really like to be able to try disabling usb legacy support in the bios, but I guess that's not an option.  I'm wondering if I should report this somewhere upstream.
