gaim 0.71 fails on MSN Plugin

Hi,

FYI,
for those who communicate with msn using people, the plugin in 0.71 seems
to be broken. (fails on load)  Than you better stay with 0.70.

*EDIT********************************************
I've just seen, contrasutra fed this to the bugtracker - this is not an archlinux
related prob, its gaim related, you can find it in their bugtracker.

Re: gaim 0.71 fails on MSN Plugin

Well, the GAIM team is pretty good, so they'll probably have an updated release in a few days.

Until then, ill just use 0.70, though that thing still has segfault issued (they've had these since 0.6).

Kritoke, could you post a patch or a newer version of gaim??? or maybe (how it's supose to be in the right way) talk to dorphell (who is package mantainer) to find a solution?

Thanks wink

Re: gaim 0.71 fails on MSN Plugin

IIRC, as of 15 October, Microsoft has closed the MSN protocol to all third party IM clients, like GAIM.  So I don't think this is a bug with GAIM as much as it's you're never going to be able to use GAIM for MSN chatting again.

Well, the folks at gaim are in healthy competition with the trillian people in
chracking protokolls, since aol/yahoo servers change their authentification
casually.

The same will happen to the msn protokoll. And as far as I know gaim 0.71
is still working if compiled against the latest library for encryption. Check
out the last enries in the sf-forum for details. This is the rather technical
approach. If microsoft will go to court to avoid that people hack the
protokoll, well this is presumable. Especially since they are selling a "license"
to third party clients. Trillian bought it, you can get it if you buy the pro-version.

Re: gaim 0.71 fails on MSN Plugin

Let's see.. kopete still working even those changes on M$ architecture, so there is no reason that gaim can't do it also. Plus, a friend of mine (he uses RH... that's a kind of web browser no?? tongue) uses gaim, and told me that 0.71 works perfect with MSN, so i think, it could be a mistake of the packager mantainer (could happen to anyone)

Re: gaim 0.71 fails on MSN Plugin

It is october 16th and my gaim .71 works fine with msn, and the cut off was somewhere around 14/15th, so my method does work with it, its a pain though.  I read in other places that mozilla's nss could be used as well with getting the encyrption to work, which might be a better way since I think it comes with arch, but I don't know how to get it to work, I have tried but never could figure it out.  If someone wants to play around with nss encyrption stuff and gaim, be my guest, it would skip around this whole package downgrading and such.  Also, another thing I have attempted, but haven't gotten working is taking the redhat rpm of gaim(since I heard it works fine) and using rpmunpack to install it.  I think it doesn't point to the right locations for libraries, I keep getting the following error when loading up gaim after doing a rpmunpack:

gaim: error while loading shared libraries: libgtkspell.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory.

That's about all the ideas on how to get it working, if you really want me to, I can upload a working gaim package, even though it isn't good to have packages in the incoming that are also in pacman(especially since the PKGBUILD is the same as the non-msn working gaim, so you would have to trust my binary package).

Re: gaim 0.71 fails on MSN Plugin

kritoque, using your words abouts mozilla's nss support, here may be the problem.
I compile gaim and didn't appear msn protocol either, so looking in the result of ./configure this appears:
checking for Mozilla nspr4 includes in ... ""
checking nspr.h usability... no
checking nspr.h presence... no
checking for nspr.h... no
checking prio.h usability... no
checking prio.h presence... no
checking for prio.h... no
checking for Mozilla nspr4 libraries... no
checking for Mozilla nss3 includes... no
checking for Mozilla nss libraries... no

Could be that msn protocol need the nss????

Re: gaim 0.71 fails on MSN Plugin

gaim-0.70 still works on my debian sid installation. However its deps include: libgcrypt1, libgnutls7, libtasn1 among others. So I guess kritoke's solution works, however I haven't tried it since I was too busy these days...

Re: gaim 0.71 fails on MSN Plugin

After a long work with netkrash yerterday at night, and compile gaim several times, we defined that the msn plugin problem was that mozilla has nspr libraries, and their are needed by msn plugin, so we package gaim again with the correct path for nspr4, and passed perfect, but there still a problem, and is that mozilla package doesn't have ssl include, that are needed for nspr alone (not nspr4).
There are two inconvinient things:
1.- recompile mozilla with ssl support
2.- gaim will depend of mozilla to work properly (that really sucks)

Who has another solution?
Could someone make a package only for ssl???

Re: gaim 0.71 fails on MSN Plugin

Hmm.  Anyone know how kopete or amsn got the new msn to work without requiring all this nasty work?  I think maybe looking at how they did it could provide an answer, or it just may be something funkified in how gaim handles the new protocol.  According to the gaim faq, the new mozilla 1.5 has a broken .pc file and missing some .h files, so that might be another problem as well when getting this to work.  I really hate having to do it my way to get it working, I even tried to revert back to the new libgcrypt to see if it was only a build time dependency, but it does indeed need the old libgcrypt stuff to work with msn.

I also tried to build gaim on top of mozilla-firebird. That thing with gaim is
that it currently sits in current while the libraries for gnutls and dependencies
are located in unstable. In other words gaim wouldn't work out of the iso.
If we can build it on top of mozilla-firebird (recompiled with nss) it will still
be possible to deliver gaim with the standard set. Otherwise gaim will
probably have to move to unstable. Finally, we can kick msn support,
which also sucks.
I wouldn't split up the mozilla or mozilla-firebird package. I don't think
nss will blow it up or slow it down to much. Additionally, I think people will
more likely have installed mozilla-firebird or mozilla than the whole set
which gives you gnutls.

Re: gaim 0.71 fails on MSN Plugin

Kritoque, here is the link to msn9 protocol. I contacted to Duncan Mac-Vicar (creator of kopete and chilean also) who told me taht kopete plugin was based on the info of the link above, so it's logical that someone (that understand about this kind of issue) go and take a look. The other thing is tell to mozilla package manteiner to re-build the package....
I'm with neri to kick out msn plugin, but not all the world usses jabber... so we have to wait until more people support it (most of the girls uses msn.... is that enough reason to continue using??? big_smile)

Re: gaim 0.71 fails on MSN Plugin

I figured out how to get the msn plugin to work easily, you may want to hit yourself after this one, lol.  If we do it this way, it should make the developers not have to enable all the nss and nspr stuff in mozilla.  Mainly what I did was make a package for both libraries and that seemed to work.  Also, I had to build gaim with differen't configure options.

Here is the link to the PKGBUILDs for each of the libraries and the fixed gaim:
