My root filesystem is absolutely ext4,but is reported as ext2

Odd, mine are fine:
$ df -Th

Is it your kernel? I'm running 2.6.35-ck whereas you appear to have the .35-git4 - maybe downgrade to .35 stable or upgrade to .35-git5.

Do you use the ext4 driver also for ext2/3 (it's a setting in the kernel)? In this case the message says ext2. But rest assured it's just the message, the filesystem itself is definitely ext4. If the bogus message really bothers you, then add "rootfstype=ext4" to your kernel commandline in grub.
