[Solved]Back from holyday updates made my computer fail (kernel panic)

Yesterday I came back from 10 day holyday and after updating quite a lot of stuff (being honest I didn't remember what since the number of packets to update was quite large) and after a reboot I got this

http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/3350/dsc0065vs.jpg
(sry for the bad shot but I think it's the best way to avoid errors copying lines)

and ofc even with fallback can't get to log
I hope somebody can help me since I'm a newbie so I don't know where to start to fix this

Thanks in advance

Re: [Solved]Back from holyday updates made my computer fail (kernel panic)

Did you notice anything unusual in the pacman output?  Any errors?

You will need to boot from a CD and chroot:

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Change_Root

Then take a look at what was updated.  Try reinstalling the kernel and if that doesn't fix it try downgrading to the previous kernel version.

I've noticed I had to try several times because of connection problems, but it happened before especially when updating several packages

Re: [Solved]Back from holyday updates made my computer fail (kernel panic)

I've managed to reinstall the kernel from chroot, back on my arch trying to install new updates the kernel that I've reinstalled is in the list of the updates
trying to continue the output is

checking package integrity...

If you encounter such an error with -Syu, just c&p it into google or the forum search.

Re: [Solved]Back from holyday updates made my computer fail (kernel panic)

I know w/o searching that in such cases the common solution would be to just force the installation of the kernel again, but I'm not sure that would be the correct solution considering the problem that I had, by the way I will try that, hoping not to have to chroot to restore the kernel again...

Re: [Solved]Back from holyday updates made my computer fail (kernel panic)

Those files did not belong to any package here, so they are probably left-overs that you can safely remove. Did anything change after reinstalling the kernel? If not, what filesystem type is / and can you post your grub config and mkinitcpio.conf ?

Reinstalling the kernel restored my system w/o changes, now everything looks ok.
What do you mean by removing the files? The current configuration is working, it's just that pacman probably doesn't recognize that I already have those files.
The question is : can I safely force pacman to install them (maybe it will just overwrite them again ) ? Or it's better to do something else?

Re: [Solved]Back from holyday updates made my computer fail (kernel panic)

In this case, it is safe to override the files with -f. It was explained on the mailing list, but I forgot what was causing this. Pacman "knows" this files after installing with "force", as they are now owned  by kernel26.

P.S.: You can either remove the offending files, or use -f switch to tell pacman to override them. I think Ramses de Norre was asking for your filesystem/mkinitcpio.conf because of the problem in the OP.
