I haven't seen this reported, I wonder if I'm the only one having this problem... I'm on x86_64 with nouveau drivers, fully up-to-date system.
VLC 1.0.6 works perfectly... latest (1.1.2-2) VLC plays some movies with a weird, hard to describe effect, almost like the old ghosting effect on analog TVs, with the addition of a few completely garbled horizontal lines at the bottom. On some DVDs I have tried, menus work fine but the movies are completely garbled.
I have studied the output of vlc -vv but I see nothing obvious; I'll post the output if requested. Any pointers would be appreciated!

Have you tried different video output plugins? There is quite a number to choose from?

Thanks a lot for the suggestions guys... I've fixed the problem, quite by accident: I rebooted the machine, and the problem went away. How often do we get to see this in linux land...
