Major props for answering this: Forcing a 1.2M 5 1/4" floppy drive?

I have an Osborne 1 and a Panasonic Senior Partner that I'm going to experiment with.  As you guys know, these machines are early 80s machines that used cutting-edge 5 1/4" disks.  I recently acquired a 386 from a thrift store that also has a 5 1/4" drive, so naturally, I opened it up and put it in my linux machine.  To my disappointment, my BIOS only has two selections for a floppy drive: 1.44M and 2.88M (both 3.5").  dmesg shows that 1.44M and 2.88M disks are being brought up respectively.  My machine fails miserably trying to manipulate the floppy drive's controller at this setting.  ddrescue won't have any of it.

So my question: is there a way to force the kernel to see this floppy drive as a 1.2M drive?

As a reward: pictures, and possibly seeing me in the #archlinux channel with my Osborne 1 computer.  And perhaps making one of them a public server temporarily.

Re: Major props for answering this: Forcing a 1.2M 5 1/4" floppy drive?

The kernel floppy device driver has several options to manipulate and change the type of the floppy drive that is detected. Have a look into <linux_kernel_source>/Documentation/blockdev/floppy.txt, the option "floppy=<drive>,<type>,cmos" looks promising to me.

Re: Major props for answering this: Forcing a 1.2M 5 1/4" floppy drive?

Is the floppy driver compiled as a module (for a standard Arch kernel it is) ? Then the parameters should go into /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf as

options floppy floppy=0,2,cmos

I suppose I'm not sure what to put for the <drive> option.  The syntax for this is undocumented and not listed on the internet anywhere within reach ...

The zero as a drive number should be correct, just try and rmmod the floppy module and re-load it via "modprobe floppy" while trying different parameters in modprobe.conf. Look at dmesg output, I think the driver will tell you when something goes wrong.

Re: Major props for answering this: Forcing a 1.2M 5 1/4" floppy drive?

Well, looks like this problem was specific to just one of my disks.  I am doing ddrescue on a bunch of floppies now without errors.  Thanks for your help!

Now to create a LiveFloppy distro to fit on one of these disks haha

Re: Major props for answering this: Forcing a 1.2M 5 1/4" floppy drive?

I've used very old and crippled versions of linux that ran off a floppy before!  Can you say kernel 2.2?

New problem: all of my high-density (1.2M) floppies worked fine.  Now the real task: my double-density disks are giving me issues.  They're as unreadable in the same way the HD floppies were before before I figured all of this out.  I've tried running "modprobe floppy floppy=0,1,cmos" for the 5 1/4" DD mode, and dmesg does show 360K.  I also noticed all of the nodes created by udev, and tried all the *360 ones, but I get similar results.  What's the trick?  These floppies are perfectly readable in my Panasonic Senior Partner, btw.

Re: Major props for answering this: Forcing a 1.2M 5 1/4" floppy drive?

Did you try to access your DD disks via /dev/fd0h360 ? Maybe the drive does not autodetect the 360k format and reading the disk fails. If the device does not exist, you'll have to create it manually:

# mknod /dev/fd0h360 b 2 20

There are more special device nodes for special formats, look into <linux_kernel_source>/Documentation/devices.txt for more info. As you are probably going to experiment with "freaky" disk formats, the section about the floppy disks might be useful.
