ATI Mobility Drivers

I am about to buy a laptop with the Radeon video card (probably 5650). So far, on all my computers I have had Nvidia's cards, therefore I wasn't concerned about the situation of ATI Linux drivers. I can only remeber the situation from a couple of years ago, it was poor indeed. What does it look like now? I can see that there are manufacturer's and open source drivers available. In this case, each of them must turn out to be better in different aspects. Could you tell me a bit about that?
