How to install submount

I know there's a guide on the wiki to install automount or something like that, but I want to install submount and was wondering exactly what steps should be taken to do so?

Re: How to install submount

getting submount going is easy.  you could try searching the forum for submount! that'd be a good start smile

Re: How to install submount

Instead of submount, you're probably better off using a program like ivman, its in the pacman repos. Just pacman -S ivman
then add dbus, hal, and ivman to your /etc/rc.conf daemons line, then copy the default ivman configs into place in /etc/ivman.

Re: How to install submount

personally, iph, i find hal and dbus really unstable, and ivman is a bit too much hassle (overkill) if all you want to do is auto mount your usbpen - just my opinion tho smile

Re: How to install submount

if you compile your own kernel, you could also try supermount. works very nice

Really?

dbus and hal have never caused problems for me, and quite frankly, you're going to be seeing a lot of dbus soon, its going to become a core component of the desktop.

give in now while you stil have a chance tongue

besides, i think something like automounting is something that should be done in userspace, rather than as a kernel module or driver. I have also found ivman substantially more reliable than supermount or submount. Besides ivman *isnt* really a hassle, nor overkill, i dont know how you could say that. Its really notthat hard to pacman -S ivman, rename 2 files as it tells you two, and then add to DAEMONS line.

Re: How to install submount

I've been having problems with ivman lately to the point that I just disabled it entirely. I couldn't get anything to save on my flash drive and when I did, I got a folder inside a folder inside a folder forever. When I tried to delete that folder I got a filesystem error. Tried reformatting it but didn't help.
Using udev, dbus, hal and kde 3.4 my fstab syncs with my flashdrive and dvd/cdrom and I'm able to open any device
from other programs without 'mounting', just click on the device and everything opens up. wink(only if a kde app.)

Re: How to install submount

You can use my pkgbuild:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=5537
It builds package with submount module for your kernel. Then you only have to install it and change fstab.
For cd automounting I'm using this:

/dev/hdc /mnt/cd subfs fs=cdfss,ro,iocharset=iso8859-1,umask=0 0 0

(actually I'm using it with iso8859-2)

Re: How to install submount

i've had similar experiences to penguin, permissions seem a bit screwed up - i think ivman is half-finished at best and half-arsed at worst. i mean look at the "mapping" business - translate that into what to do if you use udev?

i say overkill because if you want ivman you have to have hal and dbus, that's all, three pkgs and three daemons to automount a usbpen?

my system frequently hangs at shutdown when stopping HAL or DBUS.

I liked ivman - it's just that, for all the hassle, it doesn't really do much AND it certainly doesn't do it very quickly!
