ok, I'm under the impression that the partition table is at the very beginning of an SSD/HDD sector 0, byte 0, etc.... exactly how big IS the actual partition table?

Yeah, terminology can be a little confusing here. The first sector is the Master Boot Record and one of the things it contains is the primary partition table. The partition table is 4 x 16 = 64 bytes out of the 512 total bytes in the sector. Wikipedia is your friend.

ok, so the MBR holds the partition table (and the MBR is the first 512B of the disk... correct?
just wanna make sure, because I'm planning to test a theory...

Correct. The actual partition table doesn't start until the 446th byte
