Every program but Amarok seems to be able to play sounds. I've tried both local files and last.fm streaming
I searched and found some people about a year ago who had a similar problem and fixed it by installing phonon-xine and setting Amarok to use that as the backend but it doesn't work for me. Under configure playback settings I hit configure phonon. If I set the backend to gstreamer and hit "test" on my audio outputs, it plays the sound just fine but Amarok still doesn't output any sounds. If I change the backend to Xine, neither Amarok or the "test output" things work.

What sound server are you using? This used to happen to me when I was on PulseAudio.
Sex is not the answer.
Sex is the question, and Yes is the answer.

I think I'm using ALSA but honestly I'm not 100% sure. I know I had problems a while back where I couldn't play games in Wine and have TeamSpeak running at the same time. If I ran killall pulseaudio everything worked but pulseaudio isn't running on my system now.

Did you check alsamixer ? Maybe something is muted. This might sound stupid but is your sound in Amarok on ?
Did you install phonon-gstreamer or phonon-xine backend ?
Can't think of anything else for now.

I had the same problem not so long time ago, but I don`t know what exactly solved my problem. I installed every audio codec I could find and it worked
Check this out:

still I think I did something more but can`t remember what it was... Still, I`m sure I also configured ALSA
