Wine polluted my "open with another application" with duplicate entries. Where does this submenu get populated? It also reassigned my default behavior for double-clicking plain text files; now notepad opens them whereas before, gedit did. I fixed that, but how can I clean-up my menu?
EDIT: found it:
~/.local/share/applications
Just go through there and delete the .desktop files you hate
Other suspects included:
~/.local/share/mime/packages
~/.local/share/icons

adding this to .bashrc (or .zshrc) will stop wine from making the icons/mimetypes in the first place (you'll get a missing lib warning if you start things from cli, but it's harmless and you can just send it to /dev/null)
export WINEDLLOVERRIDES='winemenubuilder.exe=d'
