I had arch linux working well in the past on my Dell Latitude D630. I switched to ubuntu because I couldn't get some things working, but now I'm willing to give it another shot.
I did manage to squeeze by once and successfully installed arch, but when I boot it, it too hangs at udev. Really have no idea what the problem is. Should I try an older kernel?
Thank you.

"hangs at udev" is a bit generic - maybe you can describe what happens in more detail, and provide log files? shot in the dark, but check if you have problems with kernel mode setting (KMS) by turning it off.
