Re: Steam (+ Source engine) coming to Linux

Valve is also reported nothing good about E3 Portal 2 presentation until E3 started and Portal 2 was announced.
So...
Steam is not coming to linux. Steam is running on linux already on their testing laboratory, w00t!

Re: Steam (+ Source engine) coming to Linux

At last some good news! Steam is hiring a Linux developer that will port Windows based games to Linux! See the link below. I know this doesn't automatically mean Steam is coming to Linux but those killjoys among you, please keep it to yourself and let us have this moment smile

Besides that: The Linux-porter at Valve is also the Mac-porter.

Re: Steam (+ Source engine) coming to Linux

We need more linux guys interested in game development. I think there is only 1 decent porter because the rest of us are too busy fooling around with our systems to take any interest.

I'm greedy! I want HL3 natively on linux!

Rumours or truth, game releases have been a weak area, and one thing that linux would truely benefit from.

Wasn't it written on slashdot that it's now officially denied that steam will come to linux?

Partying with everyone who reported it as "official" without bothering or caring to check that an announcement from Valve was never made.

Honestly, if you still believe anything coming from Phoronix you get what you deserve.

Sums it up.

I've read it here: http://www.webupd8.org/2010/08/steam-fo … inues.html

But apparently, that site also took away the article, hence proving your point. hmm

I found three top names:
Ryan Gordon
Timothee Besset (id software)
Michael Simms (LGP)

That said, the count is still pretty dismal.

Re: Steam (+ Source engine) coming to Linux

Every time I heard steam was coming to Linux I didn't really want to get my hopes up but it seems it is indeed safe to now! I'm dying to try this out,  I hope all goes well and we get some kind of thing to play with by the end of the year.

Re: Steam (+ Source engine) coming to Linux

Valve stated in their Linux blog that after they optimized the graphics on Linux, it seems to perform outright better than Windows.
Also, Gabe Newell said that Windows 8 was a "catastrophe": http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/25/gabe- … d-try-hat/

Re: Steam (+ Source engine) coming to Linux

Steam for the most part already works great with Wine, I play Portal 2 all the time, although native support would be amazing.

Ok, I have recently been trying to play steam on my arch 64 machine: I get the client installed but then i launch it, i see no words in the buttons... like there is some rendering problem.... but then, I install all the fonts i can using winetricks: No luck still...... what is the solution for this issue? (the wiki does not address this subject)

Thanks and sorry for a bit of OT smile

Re: Steam (+ Source engine) coming to Linux

I have been using steam on my older Ubuntu install...So the version of Wine is older. I remember it just working out of the box...Plus, on that install its 32 bit.

This issue was introduced with the recent Wine update (1.5.10), workaround is to use the -no-dwrite flag:

wine Steam.exe -no-dwrite
