There is one area to modify /sbin/hwsetup.

To not make this thread too long.... its aleady long, I added one new forum in Arch Users' Project Discussion:

Maybe hardware specs and the modules they use?

I have one list copied from kernel 2.4.24's configure-help file. I have not decided how to use it.
http://amlug.net/new-projects/hwd/devices-modules

Make it into a web database or to display module description for each detected module in /proc/modules (hwd-e) or both?

Problem with /proc/modules it doesn't show kernel built modules. For this requires vendor and device id number.

Re: Hardware detect manager for AL (hwd-4.x)

I was not planning to announce new upgrades of hwd now when its in extra. But I was able to include few new major features and hwd moved to series 3.x.

Hwd is now able to list all detected pci and usb devices (hwd -v). It also detects system information of memory and mount points usage (hwd -y).  And improved expert mode.

PCMCIA card detection is still weak but hopefully will improve in coming upgrades. I found the pcmciatable (same as pcitable and usbtable with vendor and device id) but the search script is still missing similar to lspci and lsusb. Where does pcmcia records the vendid and devid... in /proc???

hwd-3.0 not yet in extra, get at home page:
http://amlug.net/new-projects/hwd/hwd.html

EDIT:
To check pcmcia vendid and devid is "cardctl ident".... by pcmcia-cs package. Next version will have a proper pcmcia detection.  wink

Re: Hardware detect manager for AL (hwd-4.x)

hwd 3.x is amazing!!! Thank you rasat, hwd is the best tool ever... I think it would be extremely useful if hwd became an oficial part of arch... By oficial I mean documented in the oficial documentation, and maybe as an option in the install (to know which modules to load). Just my 2 cents...

Good job rasat!

I am working on the pcmcia table in wiki but its a tedious work. Any help would be appreciated. Search for new pcmcia cards (with vendor and device id). Find missing vendor id, device id, and module names.

With the help of useful information and suggestion from phrakture, hwd again has underwent a major upgrade. Hwd is no longer "based on Knoppix" though X configure engine still remains. Lot of clean up of files and changes in the /etc/hwd/hwd script. Also I got to know /sbin/hwsetup uses the redhat hardware library (kudzu), not Knoppix. The hwsetup will also soon go out, already largely replaced by a new /sbin/hwdetet (bash).

Hwdetect recognizes multiple HD, CDROM and netcards and "hwd -v" detects PCMCIA cards.
Version 4.0 is uploaded for testing. Final will be 4.1.
I will appreciate if PCMCIA card users can run a test. I don't have laptop.

Re: Hardware detect manager for AL (hwd-4.x)

This is a test finding how "/sbin/hwstetup -v -n" (checking installed devices) and /usr/sbin/ddcxinfo-knoppix -monitor" (monitor detetct) behaves in different machines. The test doesn't affect your system.

The test is at "Arch Users' Project Discussion" forum. To reply no need to register.

Re: Hardware detect manager for AL (hwd-4.x)

Any plans on changing the backend of hwd to use hotplug/DBUS/HAL? Seems they're nicely progressing into the best tools for the job of hardware management.

That'd probobly be your best bet.

Re: Hardware detect manager for AL (hwd-4.x)

cmf wrote:

Before answering I had to take a look what DBUS and HAL do. Debian's package list is usually my first search:

DBUS - simple interprocess messaging system
http://packages.debian.org/unstable/devel/dbus-1.html
HAL- Hardware Abstraction Layer
http://packages.debian.org/unstable/admin/hal

Question arise if they do better job than lspci from pciutils package. lspci is an alternative I have in mind, but unfortunately it will be difficult to categorize the output into separate device types (audio, network, sound, etc.) from vendor and device ids alone. This is why hwsetup from kudzu is handy.... but slow.

Main point here is to have/get a search engine to detect all possible internal and external devices. Currently among Arch users there are not yet many "gadget users" with all types of devices we find in the market. They still prefer Windows, which most of the gadgets are designed for. But they are coming. Already the number of digital digital camera, palm, special m/board and laptop configure questions are increasing.

EDIT:
Found Arch having packages for both dbus and hal. I will test how they work.

Re: Hardware detect manager for AL (hwd-4.x)

With the help of z4ziggy, who has joined the hwd project, a substantial cut in the timing is achieved. The time including generating a howto page, is now about 6 second instead of 16 seconds. The package size is much smaller. The whole engine is undergoing a major change, especially in the coming 4.2 (or 5.0).

Version 4.1 is uploaded and soon in extra.

Download 4.1:

<b>EDIT</b>
Vesrion 4.1.1 - few bugs were fixed.
Vesrion 4.1.2 - few more bugs were fixed.

Re: Hardware detect manager for AL (hwd-4.x)

To addition to the latest 4.1.2 announced in the previous post, there will also be cvs snapshots available for those interested to checkout latest hwd developments.

WebPM (simple web project manager for cvs):

In "Hwd Project" click "snapshots" and scroll down to "snapshot" and click zip icon. It downloads tar.gz tarball.

It says its a USB scanner with module "scanner". I have no experience with scanners, rather asking you if you know how to setup? smile If you do, please let me know so I can enter in hwd's man page.

Re: Hardware detect manager for AL (hwd-4.x)

I filed a bug in the bugtracker but it was closed. Maybe you could have a look at this thread:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=10737

There are troubles detecting ethernet cards, isdn card, floppy drive, monitor refreshrates, etc.
