Eclipse - Can't install Plugin]

Hi

when I try to install plugins in eclipse I allways get this error:

Cannot complete the install because one or more required items could not be found.
Software currently installed: Shared profile 1.0.0.1276012981058 (SharedProfile_SDKProfile 1.0.0.1276012981058)
Missing requirement: Shared profile 1.0.0.1276012981058 (SharedProfile_SDKProfile 1.0.0.1276012981058) requires 'org.eclipse.swt.gtk.linux.x86_64.source [3.6.0.v3650b]' but it could not be found

I really don't understand what this is about. I installed eclipse using pacman and I am running arch on x86_64.

Thanks

I don't understand it, too. I've the same problem on x86_64, but not on i686.

What plugin are you trying to install, and how are you trying to install it?

I've experienced this problem when installing patrially compiled Boo plugin by Help -> Install software.

Re: Eclipse - Can't install Plugin]

Well, you're running Eclipse as the user, but its directories are owned by root. Its supposed to fallback to installing plugins to your home directory, but I've seen problems with that before.

I suggest installing the plugin you want from the AUR.

Re: Eclipse - Can't install Plugin]

Some plugins are availble in AUR, but some aren't.
Installing plugins as root seems to solve this problem.
However, I remember the last Eclipse update, that broke all plugins. I'm unsure about the reason, but installing for local user might have solved it.

Re: Eclipse - Can't install Plugin]

For those which aren't available in the AUR, you should upload them to the AUR for precisely this reason. The thing about the 'Eclipse ecosystem' is that its very much geared towards a few assumptions, most of which cannot be satisfied on any reasonable Linux distro (such as write access to the install directory).

And yes, installing as root means that when it updates you'd have to manually reinstall the plugin. And that the old ones would not get deleted (since they're outside the package management system).

You could also just uninstall eclipse and install your own copy in some user-writable directory (/home/eclipse after chmod for example), I did just that for a long while.

Re: Eclipse - Can't install Plugin]

OK. I'll have to look at another Eclipse addon package.
