Compositing state automatically turns to "temporarily disabled" after upgrading to kde 4.5.
When I click "Resume Desktop Effects", it can resume. But after a system reboot, it's set to "temporarily disabled" again.
Anyone also has this problem?

Yes, my kwinrc has Compositing enabled, as before. But everytime I login
it is disabled.
I disable functionality checks, it seemed ok now.
Thanks man

Compositing doesn't work for me with OpenGL when using two monitors. It does with one monitor. I have IBM T43 with Mobility Radeon X300. Is this known issue or should I submit a bug report?

I can use Compositing with two monitors without any problems, lenovo thinkpad 410s and a AOC lcd monitor.

Information regarding your videocard/chip will be more than helpful since your laptop is likely to be equipped with an Intel GMA, whereas the author you responded to has a legacy ati card, which is only supported by the opensource radeon drivers. Works-for-me(tm) does not apply where there are different video hardware and drivers involved.

Yep, it's hardware related issue, I just want to provide a little useful infomation, though.

For me there is a issue with screen flickering(disappear), window flickering(disappear), panel/plasmoids flickering(disappear) when using Desktop Effects with OpenGL Composition type. But i had no crashes, or something like that just few Kwin dies. With XRender Composition type all is fine but sluggish..
Graphic Card: Ati Radeon 3850HD
KDE: latest form extra.
Should i write bug report or something?

I also have the flickering and disappearing windows problem with opengl composition. I'm using ati mobility radeon HD 4650 with xf86-video-ati.

I upgraded to KDE 4.5 today...when i restarted i've got message that Kwin crashed and since then compositing is disabled. When tried to enabling it i've got message: "Desktop Effects have been suspended by another applications". I have gma950 graphic card.

That's a really nice new option that doesn't work on a vast array of hardware. Well nice to know it's easily prevented. I wondered why my compositing was disabled. Now if I can figure out when alt+f1 a second time it doesn't close kmenu.

Setting the DisableChecks to True in kwinrc fixed the problem for me.
I am wondering, though - what exactly is causing this? Is it a hardware issue because I have an intel video card? This is my laptop and my desktop is using an Nvidia video card, will I have any issues with my desktop?

I don't know about NVidia, but my Intel laptop didn't keep compositing enabled by default. However my ATI card in my desktop (4870X2) didn't have any trouble with it. I don't really notice any difference in windows behind konsole with transparency enabled.
With my laptop I just disabled blur. I guess I could try enabling it and disabling functionality checks, but I probably won't bother.

I also have flickering and disappearing windows problem with opengl

I am not sure whether this cause the "temporarily disabled" situation or not.
But it looks like the KDE devs know that some video cards may not work well
with Compositing....

It works now but I had to put this line :
OpenGLIsUnsafe=false

I have an ATI Mobility Radeon X1400. In 4.4.X it used to work flawlessly but now every time I log in compositing is disabled. If enabled then screen flickers with every KWin effect.
I checked the ATI page in the wiki for some errors I had and the problem mitigated a bit but is still there. Should I just wait for better software or file a bug report or what? I know there are workarounds but I don't want to workaround the problem, I want to solve it.

mmm... but i think that's not my bug. My screen is updated always, but it flickers when there's a kwin effect involved. Am I wrong?

*hands up*
I have the problem too. I'm using the ATI IGP 4250 HD, with the open source drivers xf86-video-ati. When i'm enabling the desktop effects, everything starts to flicker. After some time, KDE just disables compositing due to "slow performance". I also tried to shut the machine to sleep mode while running the desktop effects. When the machine wakes up, the rendering looks even more broken. It flickers extremly.

It does for me on a fresh install, but it does not on another machine that was upgraded from 4.4.5 to 4.5. I'm currently too aggravated to investigate the cause.
