issue with upgrading laptop's memory to 4gb on arch x64.

hello, fellows!

Today, have bought 2x2Gb memory sticks to upgrade my laptop, before there were: 2x1Gb memory sticks and arch linux x64 (system architecture is proper, so, i havn't seen any obstacles).
I've installed memory, check its size in BOIS and it was correct - 4Gb with some tail, but system failed to boot - it is constantly going to reboot on step "waiting for udev events to ....". Here some of my researches: booting from install cd with arch x64 (quite fresh, one month old) is failed on the same step; booting from install cd arch x32 (few years old smile) is successful; booting system with any of memory sticks alone (even in any slot) is successful too.

any opinions on this issue?
thanks.

Can your laptop use 4 GB? Just because you can stick them in doesn't mean that they will work.
Check the specs for your computer, motherboard.

Re: issue with upgrading laptop's memory to 4gb on arch x64.

Perhaps you will find that the memory settings in BIOS need attention since you have changed to provide 4GB .

My system is 64bit with 4GB of memory installed.  It has 2 2GB pc6400 sticks and my memory settings in Intel 945 are set to manually runcpu at 200mhz and memory set to 400mhz with a multiplier of 2 (ddr2).  Thus the cpu FSB and memory are at the same frequency.

The kicker here is that the motherboard doesn't have address lines for 64bit so I get only 32bit addressing.  Limited to 3.2.GB of addressable memory.

Your system reports the 4GB so it has the address lines for 64bit.  Perhaps the BIOS needs a change to apply the new memory setup to the cpu or some such.

Just a thought, not a sure thing.
Minor edit.

thaks for answers. looks like there is some hardware issues with memory frequency.

Another possibility is that the new memory is incompatible with your laptop.  Check that against recommended memory sticks for your machine.

Just another possibility.EDIT: matched pair?
