[solved] problem loading rt73.bin firmware

ive hit a big issue yesterday which i havent been able to figure out.

when trying to use the wireless usb adapter, i get the following error in dmesg

phy0 -> rt2x00lib_request_firmware: Error - Failed to request Firmware.

even though the file exists in

# ls /lib/firmware/rt73.bin
/lib/firmware/rt73.bin

the udev rule in charge of loading the firmware is there too

# ls /lib/udev/rules.d/50-firmware.rules
/lib/udev/rules.d/50-firmware.rules

and last but not least, the hardware works ok on an ubuntu livecd (using it to post right now).

this happened after a hardware lock (which i suffer from time to time after resuming from ram). so i thought something got corrupted along the way. i went through and reinstalled:

kernel26
linux-firmware
udev
initscripts

checked rc.conf for consistency.

im lost. and dont want to reinstall the whole thing sad. anyone got a clue as to where to look at?

thanks in advance..
