KDE 4.5: tray icons theme

Hi,

Does a tray icons theme exist as a separate entity? If it does, how am I supposed to change it?

you're not supposed to change it

The icons are located in /usr/share/apps/desktoptheme/default/icons. If you remove those your icon theme should be used if all icons are supported, if not you'll probably have some blank space there.

You could just rename the folder. If it doesn't work out just rename it back.

Well yeah, they must have looked a bit too much at the monochrome icons in Ubuntu I suppose. I don't oppose monochrome icons per se, it just looks too ugly when some random colored icon is in between.

That shouldn't happen in KDE, the icons are forced in certain order; Normal apps, static icons. The whole idea was to differentiate those two, as far as I know.

That's exactly right Teho. The monochrome and colored icons do not get mixed together, but having a colored set of icons adjacent to a monochrome set still looks a little odd. In any case, my main complaint with the monochrome icons is that they detract from overall usability. Colored icons make it easier to distinguish one app from another. So, for me at least, the new icons look nice; they're just less useful.

By the way, I really don't like the way the system tray opens a pop-up menu for hidden icons. It sucked when Windows added that "feature" and it sucks no less when a FOSS desktop copies the idea. Since the system tray is just a plasmoid, you'd think we could still have the option of either the old style or new style as distinctly separate widgets for the panel. Why do they completely replace one with another?

Monochrome is not that bad, the icons in my opinion are good, clean and simple, the problem here (a least for me; a weak sighted person) is that light color on light background is simply not practical. regardless of the color of the icons this simple "contrast" rule should always be applied. There should be a pair of sets, a dark one and its counterpart so to be used on different panel backgrounds.

Agreed. That would help quite a lot, though I would still like to see the previous system tray widget as an available plasmoid as well.

I just would like a simple systemtray that showed all icons no matter what, without those "features" of hidding stuff, they are reallyyyyyyyyyyy annoying.

God, those monochrome icons are truly hideous. I do not mind how Windows7 or Ubuntu's GNOME does it, but KDE's initial attempt truly looks amateurish. When I removed them (save for notifications), I noticed that powerdevil refuses to revert to its old icon. Instead now an empty space sits where an icon should be. Does anyone know how to restore its old icon or have its svgz handy?

I don't understand the problem?
You can choose which icons the auto hidden functionality affect?
You can choose which categories of icons is showed in the tray.
It's easy to get back colored icons if you like that.

I suppose its easy to theme the icons with the new system. I think its logical if the tray icons match the plasma theme. Maybe the new system is the fist step against a system it's incorporated in the theming of plasma?

Move or delete the icons (svgz's) from /usr/share/apps/desktoptheme/default/icons/. The only icon that I cannot get back is battery.svgz for powerdevil. If that file is missing, powerdevil's icon on the systray will be blank. Although, copying /usr/share/apps/desktoptheme/default/widgets/battery-oxygen.svgz to the icons folder as battery.svgz might work.
