I have a Samsung NC10 (Intel GMA 945) which I use together with an external monitor (1280x1024). The external screen is to the right of the netbook, so I want to use the --right-of option in xrandr. This worked fine after adding 'Virtual 2304 1024' to xorg.conf.
Today I ran pacman -Syu which, among other stuff, updated xorg-server (1.6.1.901-3 -> 1.6.3-2). After the upgrade, I can't get dual screen to work the same way as before - when running xrandr, I get
xrandr: screen cannot be larger than 2048x2048 (desired size 2304x1024)
After searching around a bit I found that 2048x2048 is a hardware limitation. However, this is with 3D acceleration - DRI should be disabled here (it was before the upgrade, and xorg logs state that DRI is disabled). If DRI isn't the problem, why was I able to do it this way before the upgrade?
Any suggestion on how to fix this, other than downgrading, is much appreciated. For now I can use --below, but it is far from optimal.

Hey, did you ever fix this? I'm getting the same issue with an Intel integrated graphics card. I never tried it before today though. Also, my mouse dissapears if I only use my external monitor. In my case the external monitor is 1680x1050.

Same issue. Latest drivers and X. Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02). On Windows I've been using an external 1600x1200 CRT as a second display for my 1024x768 laptop (incl. 3D acceleration and overlay video playback on both screens), but on Linux 'screen cannot be larger than 2048x2048'.

Sorry for not posting an update earlier; I never found a solution, so I used the workaround --below (placing the screens vertically and thus avoiding the 2048x2048 limitation).
Now I haven't used the setup for a while so I don't know if it works with recent Xorg versions.

I've been using the workaround of vertical screens also. Although I've noticed that recently I've been able to use a larger screen, but the graphics performance is absolutely terrible. When I open a new window I see it re-paint the screen in about .2 seconds. Although I do have my second screen rotated 90 degrees, I haven't tried without that rotation in a while.

I've positioned my external monitor below built-in, and this worked. But when I next turned on my laptop without external monitor - my mouse cursor became invisible (changing it does not help, rebooting does not help either). Now I can only see a visible mouse cursor if an external monitor is connected. Any ideas how to fix this?
