ATI Radeon 9600 Pro DRI quesitons

I swtiched over from NVIDIA and I'm lost on where to go to get Open GL up and working again in XWindows. I'm currently using the vesa driver.

I went over to the DRI site per ati.com and have no clue what I need to download. The documentation at the site was useful, however all I could find in the download section were a bunch of 386 tgz files with weird names that made no sense.

Any help on where to even begin this process please post, thank you.

Re: ATI Radeon 9600 Pro DRI quesitons

Already have to Geforce2 MX's sitting around somehwere  roll and they dont support DVI which the Radeon does  tongue

I have come accross those files before... They are RPM packages... I'll see if I can extract them and use them on Arch  :?

Re: ATI Radeon 9600 Pro DRI quesitons

Having troubles extracting... I unpack the RPM and unzip, but when i do the cpio -i <file> and press enter it just sits idle without further information or file output. Am I doing this right?

jskier:
Check http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=1482
for installing ati catalyst drivers the "arch way".
Simply copy-paste both files in a dir & run (as root) 'makepkg'.

Re: ATI Radeon 9600 Pro DRI quesitons

Alright, package installed just fine although I have no idea what happened to get there

Anyway, where do I go next? I tried specifying the card driver in the config file as 'ati' 'ati-driver' 'rage' and 'radeon' and all I get is the no screens error when I startx. I could not find any documentation at the ATI site. I'm such a newb

Re: ATI Radeon 9600 Pro DRI quesitons

You need to have the source tree (with compiled headers) of running kernel around. If you haven't compiled your kernel, do :

$ pacman -S cvsup
$ abs
$ cd /var/abs/kernels/kernel
$ makepkg
$ cd /usr/src
$ mv linux linux.old
$ ln -sf /var/abs/kernels/kernel/src/linux-2.4.22 /usr/src/linux
$ cd /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod
$ ./make.sh
$ cd ..
$ ./make_install.sh
$ modprobe agpgart
$ modprobe fglrx
$ fglrxconfig

Re: ATI Radeon 9600 Pro DRI quesitons

Did everything you said, but once I got to this I got an error:

[root@intel2500 src]# cd /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod
bash: cd: /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod: No such file or directory

Re: ATI Radeon 9600 Pro DRI quesitons

You installed the ati-drivers package, right ? Do 'pacman -Q -l ati-drivers | grep modules' and cd thar dir, maybe I wrote it wrong in my previous post.

Re: ATI Radeon 9600 Pro DRI quesitons

If he's using the default kernel, I'm pretty sure that the dri drivers are compiled in to the kernel, not as modules.

Thanx Xentac, I haven't check the config of the default kernel. So, jskier, time to build a kernel smile.

Re: ATI Radeon 9600 Pro DRI quesitons

You don't need gl for DVD.  Just install xine or mplayer...

Yes, but with the vesa drivers the playback is awful in xine anyways.

Re: ATI Radeon 9600 Pro DRI quesitons

Why not use the Xfree radeon drivers?  They don't work?

Re: ATI Radeon 9600 Pro DRI quesitons

XFree drivers work, however ati's drivers provide more fps & tv-out. Actually I don't have a radeon (nvidia junkie here smile), but my small brother does (an 9200) & I was installing AL on his box last weekend, that I spent at my parents place... So don't consider me an expert on that thing smile.
To play dvd or divx you don't need gl (or 3d support in general) or vesa. Just mplayer (best player ever IMHO) with vo=xv or even better vo=xvidix:radeon (check mplayer's documentation for how to enable & use it.

Re: ATI Radeon 9600 Pro DRI quesitons

My point was that xfree's radeon drivers work to play dvd's just fine, cause they give you the shmem features and stuff.  The only reason you want ati's drivers is to have glx and tv-out (even then... I know the xfree drivers make tv-out work (kind of) with my radon 7500), dvds don't come into play there.
