i tried both the xmonad from pacman repository, and from hackage (cabal).
What should i do? (install the xmonad-darcs version ?)

Why are you running as root?

Security is not just defending against malicious attacks, it's also defending against bugs, accidents, etc.
That said, give us the output of ls ~/.xmonad as well as the contents of your .xinitrc .
You may also want to try with /usr/share/xmonad-0.9.1/man/xmonad.hs and see what happens. Copy it to ~/.xmonad and run xmonad --recompile . Then restart xmonad.
