I have recently switched to Arch and noticed that compiz is much slower on Arch than it was on Ubuntu. When I have all the same effects enabled as I did on Ubuntu, the framerate while rotating the cube desktop is about 10 fps vs 30 fps on Ubuntu. Also, compiz's average framerate on Arch is about 30 fps.

Again, providing info about your graphics setup wouldn't hurt.

I've got an Intel graphics card, and I installed the xf86-video-intel package.

lspci | grep VGA
More info is never too much. ;P

I know there has been a lot of changes in the intel graphic stack in the last year or so. What kernel and Xorg version are used vs what is installed in arch?
Maybe someone with info of intel in linux/X.org state can comment.

OK, so the output of "lspci | grep VGA" is "00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)"
As for my kernel etc., I'm using the latest packages in the core, extra, and community repositories. I'm not quite sure if that's what you meant.

I had this exact problem, then I installed xf86-video-intel-newest from the AUR, and it went from 15 fps to 30-40 fps.

I'm going to try that package; I also had 60fps compiz with intel drivers on ubuntu, but currently have half that, so I'm using xfwm.
Edit: the package conflicts with xorg-server, so I'm rather confused about its utility. Anyone else have any luck?

Yaourt asks to remove xorg-server with the -d option. Isn't that dangerous? When I run "pacman -Rsc xorg-server" it wants to remove a couple of my programs, my touchpad drver, and my mouse themes.
Offline
Ehh, did you run pacman -Syu since you installed?

OK, I installed xf86-video-intel-newest from AUR, it removed xorg-server (which I installed again) and now my compiz framerate is up. If this is the newest Intel video driver, why isn't it in the Arch repos?

Seriously, update your system before doing anything else. xf86-video-intel-newest from AUR is currently on the exact same version as the package in extra (I guess the package in AUR normally has development/unstable versions), any improvements therefore came from updating xorg-server....

OK, I just updated my system (it was already up-to-date). According to pacman, the version from the Arch repositories is the same as the one from AUR. I uninstalled the one from AUR and reinstalled the one from Arch and now compiz is slow again. If the two are the same version, what's causing the difference in performance.

Hmm allright, if you had it updated already I don't really understand why it would conflict with the xorg-server, as the conflict array in the PKGBUILD says 'xorg-server<1.8.0'. Maybe this is a yaourt-problem?
For why it is still faster for you with the aur-package, maybe it draws in other packages via dependencies that are different from the stock ones in the repo? You could also compare the aur PKGBUILD with the one from ABS to check for differences.

Are you sure you are synching with an up-to-date mirror?
The only difference between the two packages is that the arch package uses a patch called intel-2.11-no-pageflipping.patch

AUR PKG: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages/xf86- … t/PKGBUILD

scrapped. I am confused. don't want to spread it around.

I'm using the mirrors from kernel.org, which I'm pretty sure are up-to-date. Also, my intel driver is version 2.12.0-1, same as the AUR version.

Maybe that patch should be included in the Arch package... (devs?)

Actually, the no-pageflipping patch is applied for the arch package, but not in the AUR PKGBUILD:
Disable pageflipping again. Without this, games still crash on my G45M and it seems to cause massive flickering in KDE with composite
So for now, your best bet will be to use the driver from aur with pageflipping enabled (or downgrade to 2.12.0-2 and add it do IgnonrePkg). To get the patch out of the official package, you can (for example) check related bug reports on the arch tracker, encourage people to take it upstream, offer your help for fixing the mentioned problems (as far as you can), and let the maintainer know about the speed penalty from the patch.
Happy Arching!

If you want the devs to acknowledge your request, use the bug tracker.
